TECHNICAL DETAILS

Scans
Unless otherwise specified, scans will be made at 300 dpi to the client-specified size, and delivered as .tiff files.  If multiple sizes are requested, scans will be created, sharpened, etc. individually at each specified size.

Prints
If we are scanning to create a print, the scan will be sent back to the client for approval before printing begins.  If we are printing from a digital file, we will discuss the need for a proofing round based on my view of the file and our understanding of what is to be achieved.

If we are printing from a camera file, I would prefer to have access to both the photographer’s “processed” file (showing his/her vision for the image) and the RAW file (if available).

Viewing
In viewing either prints or scans, the color-viewing environment is critical to an accurate appraisal of the results.

For viewing scans, a calibrated monitor is essential.  But not all calibrations are created equal, and depending upon the method used and preferences input, the results will be dramatically different.  I am judging and viewing on a 27” iMac 5K Retina Display (early 2019), calibrated with DisplayCAL 3.8.2 and a Datacolor Spyder4.

Color prints will appear different in different lighting environments.  That’s why it’s essential to balance color prints for the environment and color temperature where they will eventually be viewed.  I can balance for most color temperatures; nominally, I balance for 5,000-degree K lighting.
